In the census of 1930, Howard was living with his parents, Howard and Dorothy Hooker. Howard J. was the youngest of 4 siblings. Howard was 12, Victor 8, Shirley 4 and Paul 2. Living in the same household were Dorothy’s parents, Charles Victor Dean and Mary A Dean.

draft registration from 1940, Howard is described as 5 ft 10 inches, 175 pounds, light complexion, brown hair and blue eyes. Neal has said that Howard¨s eyes were an intense blue.

In 1940 Howard and Lucille were living in McMinnville, Oregon. Little Larry was 2 years old, Howard’s occupation is listed as District Salesman for a retail agency selling sewing machines. They lived in a rented house, paying $25.00 a month. He was working 60 hours a week 52 weeks a year.

By 1950 the Hooker family included Margaret Joy and Gilbert Neal as well as Larry. They were living in Glendal, California and Howard had his own Real Estate Office.

Howard married Pansy Lucille Neal, known always as Lucille in 1936 and they had their first child, Howard Lawrence, in 1937. Larry died in as the result of a tragic accident in 1952.
